Holding Hands

I’ve been thinking…

…about holding hands.

As I watched a little 2-year-old springing and skipping and thoroughly enjoying crossing the parking lot, I realized how holding her daddy’s hand gave her the confidence to bounce along without a care in her world.

In a few short years, she will shyly hold hands with a newfound friend and still later, with her beloved as they self-consciously express the special connection that grows out of young love.

Married folks hold hands subconsciously – just a matter of habit — but in reality, this so much more as they communicate the continuity of their bond.

And the dearest of all…holding the hands of an aged loved one, with enduring love.

We hold hands to give us confidence to forge ahead.

We hold hands to express to the world that we are connected to this special someone.

We hold hands as a tangible confirmation of the continuity of love.

We hold hands when the quiet overtakes us, with unwavering devotion.

This is what I was thinking as I watched that exuberant little girl —thinking about the power of something as simple as holding hands.
